Why Petrozone

Why Petrozone International

We engineer, integrate, test and commission substation automation systems ourselves. The team that draws the architecture is the team that configures the IEDs, runs the FAT and stands in the substation at energisation.

Engineering-led execution

Architecture drawings, I/O schedules and signal lists are produced and reviewed in-house before a single device is configured.

IEC 61850 expertise

SCL engineering, GOOSE datasets, station and process bus configuration, and message-level verification with a protocol analyser.

Testing & commissioning capability

Secondary injection, interlock proving, point-to-point checks and communication testing by our own engineers at FAT and on site.

Legacy system integration

Serviceable relays and non-IEC 61850 devices mapped onto the station bus through converters, so upgrades can be staged bay by bay.

Saudi Arabia field support

Testing and commissioning teams mobilise to sites across Saudi Arabia, including remote industrial and oil and gas locations in the Eastern Province and along the Red Sea coast.

One team to energisation

No handover gap between designer, integrator and commissioning engineer. One party is accountable from architecture to handover.

Our scope

Station-level architecture, server and HMI configuration, gateway point lists and network design.

IEC 61850 services

IEC 61850 Technologies

We engineer, configure and test every IEC 61850 mechanism your substation uses, and prove each one at FAT and SAT.

GOOSE

Generic Object Oriented Substation Event

We design the publisher and subscriber matrix, configure datasets for interlocking, blocking and protection signals, and verify every message with a protocol analyser.

MMS

Manufacturing Message Specification

We engineer datasets and report control blocks so HMI, SCADA and historian receive the signals they need, then verify the complete signal list.

Sampled Values

We configure merging units and subscribing IEDs for sampled-value transfer and check accuracy against injected references.

Station Bus

We design and configure the station bus: topology, VLANs, priorities, redundancy and network performance testing.

Process Bus

We engineer process bus architecture, bandwidth and time synchronisation, then commission the digitised measurement path.

IED Integration

We bring protection and control devices from different vendors into one architecture, including SCL files and interoperability checks.

Supervisory systems

zenon SCADA for Substation Automation

Petrozone provides SCADA engineering and integration for substation automation environments using zenon SCADA, where applicable to project requirements. The system provides operators with a central interface for monitoring, control, alarms, events, trends and historical information across the substation.

What a zenon scope includes

zenon is the HMI, SCADA and historian environment in one platform, so we engineer operator graphics, alarms, events and long-term data together rather than as separate systems.

Substation Communication & Network Engineering

Reliable communication is fundamental to modern substation automation. Petrozone supports communication architecture connecting IEDs, SCADA, gateways, historians and process-level equipment, including the GPS, NTP and PTP time synchronisation that makes event records and sampled values comparable across devices.

Modernisation

Legacy Substation Automation Upgrade

Existing substations do not always require complete replacement. Petrozone can support staged automation upgrades by integrating serviceable legacy equipment with modern SCADA, gateways and IEC 61850-based systems, where technically feasible.

FAQ

Substation Automation FAQ

What is a Substation Automation System?+
An SAS is the protection, control, monitoring and communication layer of a substation. It replaces hard-wired panel logic and isolated relays with networked intelligent electronic devices that exchange data over a common standard, giving faster fault clearance, complete event records and remote visibility.
What is IEC 61850 in substation automation?+
IEC 61850 is the international standard for communication in substations. It defines a common data model and the services devices use to exchange information, which is what makes multi-vendor integration and digital process-level communication practical.
What is GOOSE in IEC 61850?+
GOOSE is fast peer-to-peer messaging between IEDs, used for interlocking, blocking and protection-related signals. It replaces many hard-wired inter-panel signals with multicast messages on the station or process bus.
What is the difference between Station Bus and Process Bus?+
The station bus connects bay-level IEDs with station-level systems such as HMI, SCADA, historian and gateway. The process bus sits below the bay level and carries digitised current and voltage from merging units and switchyard equipment to protection and control IEDs.
What is zenon SCADA?+
zenon is a supervisory software platform used for monitoring and control in energy and industrial environments. Petrozone engineers and integrates zenon-based supervisory systems where they suit the project requirements.
Can zenon SCADA integrate with IEC 61850 devices?+
Yes. IEC 61850-enabled protection and control devices can be integrated into the supervisory environment, either directly or through a gateway, with the signal list and point mapping engineered per project.
Can you integrate protection relays from different manufacturers?+
Yes. Multi-vendor integration is routine work. Interoperability is checked device by device during engineering and proven again at FAT with a protocol analyser rather than assumed from datasheets.
Do you provide RTU and gateway integration?+
Yes — RTU integration, gateway configuration, protocol conversion, signal mapping, point-list development and communication testing to the control centre.
Can you upgrade an existing substation automation system?+
Yes, where technically feasible. Serviceable relays speaking Modbus, IEC 60870-5-103 or DNP3 can be mapped onto the station bus through converters, so the upgrade can be staged bay by bay instead of replacing everything at once.
Do you provide FAT and SAT?+
Both. Test procedures are issued for client approval beforehand and signed records afterwards. FAT covers logic, interlocking, alarms and communication; SAT covers point-to-point, functional and communication testing on site.
Do you provide onsite SAS commissioning in Saudi Arabia?+
Yes. Our testing and commissioning teams mobilise to sites across the Kingdom, including remote industrial and oil and gas locations, and remain available after energisation.
How long does SAS commissioning take?+
A thorough FAT shortens site work considerably. Typical site testing runs from a few days for a small industrial substation to several weeks for a multi-bay transmission substation, largely governed by outage availability.
How much does substation automation cost?+
Cost is driven by the number of bays, the protection philosophy, the level of redundancy and whether a process bus is used. We price from the architecture and signal list, so a single-line diagram and a bay count are usually enough for an indicative figure.
What information is required for an SAS proposal?+
A single-line diagram, bay count and voltage levels, the protection philosophy or relay list, the required control-centre interface, and any client standards. For upgrades, add the existing relay and protocol inventory.

An automation engineer will review it and come back with an architecture outline, a scope of work and an indicative programme.
